“Making burlap from coffee sacks wilder than it should be”

Coffee Sacks and Mother of Pearl.

When I first came up with this combination of materials, it didn’t immediately make sense to me how I could come up with an artful and bespoke folding knife; but I knew there was something worth exploring in this direction.

So once again I took up the challenge to design a new iteration of the Ani folding knife using coffee sacks made of burlap. I wanted to featured the woven fibers of the burlap artfully that it creates a visual story around the playful iridescence of Mother of Pearl.

With this folding knife, I wanted to start strong. I created the blade using Damasteel with a relatively linear flow to match the woven pattern of the burlap. The spine of the blade features a straight edge complemented by a diagonal plunge line that flows into the mother of pearl thumb stud. On the other hand, the cutting edge of the blade was shaped to perfectly fit in the sculpted handle when folded.

Down towards the handle, I crafted a matching set of pivot collars. One side of the folding knife has a Damasteel collar, paired with a steel presentation pivot with a Mother of Pearl inlay. The other side has a steel hex petal pivot with a small Mother of Pearl collar, right before the Damasteel collar.

The handle of the folding knife was made with black burlap micarta, Imagine layers of coffee sacks, soaked in resin, then pressed and hardened together to make a solid slab of material. That’s the material I used to craft the scales of this knife.

On both sides I added inlays of mother of pearl which contrast the rigid pattern of the handle material with discs of colorful iridescence. I assembled the handle scales together with a Damacore backspacer and finished it off with the Damacore pocketclip.

The result was this stunning lightweight folding knife that featured the coffee sack burlap and mother of pearl in a sophisticated and unique manner, something that would definitely invite curiosity when seen clipped onto a pocket.
